MONASTERY OF HIERONYMITES :
Monastery of the Jerónimos: In 1496, King Manuel requested to the Holy See an authorisation to build a great monastery at the entrance of Lisbon, close to the banks of the Tagus River. Works started in 1501 and approximately one century later they were finished. The Monastery of the Jerónimos (Hieronymites) is usually known as the "jewel" of the typically Portuguese Manueline style. It combines architectural elements of the final Gothic and Renaissance with a royal symbol related to Christ and to naturalism, which makes it unique and worth of admiration. Monastery of Hieronymites was added in 1983 to the World Heritage list.
BELEM TOWER
King John II (1455-1495) created an original and effective plan which consisted in the formation of a tripartite defence between the Cascais Bulwark, the Fortress of St. Sebastian at Caparica, on the other side of the River, and a third fortress, the Tower of Belém. King Manuel I, his successor, kept the task to order its construction. Francisco de Arruda was appointed Master of the Belém Bulwark and its building went on between 1514 and 1520. As a symbol of the King's prestige, the decoration of the Tower of Belém displays the particular Manueline symbology - thick ropes surround the building, crowning it with elegant knots, armillary spheres, crosses of the Military Order of Christ and naturalistic elements. I In 1983, UNESCO inscribed Belem Tower in the World Cultural Heritage List.
