DAY 2 VICENZA AND PALLADIAN VILLAS (UNESCO SITE SINCE 1994)
Vicenza is among the least celebrated of the cities which are centres of Italian art and deserves to be considered on its own merits. Vicenza is situated in fertile country along overland routes which have always been busy, and the abundance of water was crucial to its rapidly becoming industrialised. It was also the preferred site of monasteries for the minor religious orders, and its magnificent churches, like the one dedicated to San Felice and San Fortunato which was built in the Romanesque period, or the Duomo, still bear witness of the fact. But Vicenza is above all the city in which Palladio’s architecture triumphs: it is in evidence round every corner and in any view of the city, and it is there in everything he did from his first major work, the Basilica, to his last, the Olympic Theatre
Lunch.
In the afternoon visit Villa Valmarana "La Rotonda" Built in the 1570's for the prelate Paolo Almerico, the more famous invention of Palladio - is an original example of villa of the prelate. La Rotonda differentiates in the scenery of the venetian villas of the latter half of the XVIth century: it's a suburban mansion, refined meeting point for the aristocratic of Vicenza, place of amusement and "literary idleness." Palladio probably was ispired by the roman Pantheon, then named "Rotonda", resuming the classical theme of the "sacred space". Also the sixteenth century frescoes, by Alessandro and Giambattista Maganza and by Anselmo Canera, appear in tuning with this celebrating program.
Villa Pisani Ferri In 1523 the venetian lord Giovanni Pisani bought in a auction sale the possession confiscated to Nogarole family, which in the Cambrai war was along with the Imperials, at Bagnolo (near Lonigo). The river facade has very different spirit: two strong small towers contain a loggia with three rustic ashlars arcades, dominated by a tympanum. We don't forget that in the Lonigo area this venetian family also built two other famous buildings: the monumental Palace in the center of the town and the famous Rocca Pisani planned by Vincenzo Scamozzi.
Dinner and overnight in a beautiful Villa along the way towards Venice.

The Rialto Bridge makes this area a magnet for tourists exploring its food markets and pasta shops. Afternoon at your disposal for personal visits and shopping. In the evening we suggest a guided walking tour in the unknown part of Venice visiting the oldest and most famous “osterie” (taverns). During this gourmet discovery tour you will wander from place to place stopping to sip wine and eat “cicheti” (Venetian snacks) at the local “Bacari”.
These wine bars which offer finger food, derive their name from Bacchus, the god of wines. You will stop for an “ombra” (shadow), a small special glass of wine. Someone says it is called an “ombra” because it is a mere shadow of a drink; according to a legend the term “ombra” sees its origin around the turn of the century by a man used to sell drinks from a stall in the shade of San Marco. Either ways, the “bacari” are firmly entrenched in the popular culture.
